      How to Size Orchestra Instruments for Students

      This guide explains how to measure and choose the appropriate size violin, viola, cello, and bass for students.

      Selecting the correct size orchestra instrument is crucial for student musicians, helping them play comfortably and develop proper technique. This guide provides step-by-step instructions for measuring and choosing the right size for violins, violas, cellos, and basses, ensuring the best fit for your students.

      Sizing for Violin and Viola

      Proper sizing for violins and violas ensures that students can reach all notes comfortably and play without straining. To select the right size, it’s essential to measure the student's arm length correctly.

      Steps to Measure:

      1. Have the student stand straight.
      2. Extend their left arm fully out to the side.
      3. Measure the length from their neck to the middle of their palm.

      Use the measurements to determine the suitable size:

      Violin Sizes:

      • 4/4 Size: Arm length of 23 inches or more.
      • 3/4 Size: Arm length of 22 inches.
      • 1/2 Size: Arm length of 20 to 21 inches.
      • 1/4 Size: Arm length of 18 to 19 inches.
      • 1/8 Size: Arm length of 16 to 17 inches.
      • 1/16 Size: Arm length of 14 to 15 inches.

      Viola Sizes:

      • 16.5 inch: Arm length of 28 inches or more.
      • 16 inch: Arm length of 27 inches.
      • 15.5 inch: Arm length of 24 to 25 inches.
      • 15 inch: Arm length of 23 inches.
      • 13 inch: Arm length of 22 inches.
      • 12 inch: Arm length of 20 to 21 inches.
      • 11 inch: Arm length of 18 to 19 inches.

      Sizing for Cello and Bass

      Cellos and basses are larger instruments that require careful consideration of the student’s height for proper sizing. Playing the correct size allows for better posture and reach, contributing to a smoother learning experience.

      Steps to Measure:

      1. Have the student stand against a wall.
      2. Measure their height from the floor to the top of their head.

      Match the student's height with the appropriate size:

      Cello Sizes:

      • 4/4 Size: Suitable for students 60 inches tall or more.
      • 3/4 Size: Suitable for students 54 to 59 inches tall.
      • 1/2 Size: Suitable for students 48 to 53 inches tall.
      • 1/4 Size: Suitable for students 41 to 47 inches tall.
      • 1/8 Size: Suitable for students 34 to 40 inches tall.

      Bass Sizes:

      • 3/4 Size: Suitable for students 60 inches or taller.
      • 1/2 Size: Suitable for students 54 to 59 inches tall.
      • 1/4 Size: Suitable for students 48 to 53 inches tall.
      • 1/8 Size: Suitable for students below 48 inches tall.
